Aframax tanker Randgrid caught fire in engine room during conversion at Mekjarvik Yard in Stavanger, Norway. The flames started in engine compartment during welding works, but exact cause is unknown. All the 138 non-essential workers on board were evacuated and the accident was reported to local authorities. At the scene were sent firefighters from the shipyard, which in assistance with 20 remaining workers succeeded to extinguish the flames without causing major damage. Also ambulances were delivered to the burning tanker and 7 people were got medical treatment for smoke inhalation, but without suffering serious injuries.
The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident. The exact extend of damages is unknown and will be assessed by boarded firefighters after complete ventilation of the engine compartment.
