Five died during fire on product tanker Gamkonora in Indonesia

Aframax product tanker Gamkonora caught fire at Batam Ship Repair Yard in Indonesia, causing death of five people and injury of one. The vessel was docked for maintenance and repairs at the shipyard, but during welding works at the pump room erupted fire and there was some explosion. The crew and other workers succeeded to extinguish the flames quickly without allowing them to extend to the cargo and engineering compartments. The accident was reported to local authorities and at the scene arrived rescuers and firefighters, who assessed the situation. They found the five people dead and one seriously injured in the pump room of Aframax product tanker Gamkonora.

The local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, as it is not yet clear what had happened and how exactly the fire started.

The product tanker Gamkonora (IMO: 9641091) has overall length of 244.50 m, moulded beam of 44.00 m and maximum draft of 8.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 88,258 DWT and the gross tonnage is 63,014 GRT. The ship was built in 2012 by New Century Shipbuilding in Jingjiang, China.
